La Queue du Chat

La Queue du Chat in brief:

Within four years of launching its business, La Queue du Chat has become THE organic and fair-trade baby and children’s brand of reference in France.  La Queue du Chat is sold in more than 100 shops in France (including Le Bon Marche and Les Galeries Lafayette), and a further 20 countries abroad. The clothes and accessories are both fun and practical, with just that little touch of chic French style… at affordable prices.

Based in the South West of France, La Queue du Chat has four full time employees, and has indirectly created employment for one additional role. The company also works with young independent artists across Europe for specific tasks. La Queue du Chat supports the work and funding of a not for profit organisation providing employment for mentally handicapped adults. With its manufacturing partner in India, the company guarantees excellent working conditions for several hundred local workers.

La Queue du Chat promotes fair trade and transparency in all commercial practices.

The company is an active member of ‘Transparent Trade’. La Queue du Chat’s turnover increased by 20% in 2009, and has more than doubled every year since its creation.

About Us

After several years honing her skills for a major French fashion house, Anne-Charlotte was suddenly bitten by the travel bug. Trading in her drawing table and computer for a stack of sketchbooks and a big map, she set off on her travels to far off lands seeking inspiration for what would eventually become, with her business partner, her own enterprise. She was particularly struck by the diverse beauty of Asia with its myriad cultures, magical animals, hand-made fabrics, and brilliant colours, all of which were to become sources of inspiration in the design of La Queue du Chat’s (aka The Cat’s Tail) collections. With a similar desire to travel, Helene determined she’d put her educational background to use not in an ivory tower, but instead on the ground on the front-line, and so put her practical and educational knowledge (a degree in Political Science combined with several years professional experience with a number of NGOs) to good practice. Never one to give up in the face of adversity,

Helene returned from her trips in the field passionate about how she might be able to make a difference, and build a small bridge between people in beautiful but far away places and a small office in the South of France. Consequently, with the establishment of La Queue du Chat, Helene and Anne-Charlotte have not only created a business that reflects their combined fields of interest, but in doing so they have succeeded in promoting the values they strongly believe in – those reflected in fair-trade.

La Queue du Chat has expended with the arrival of Gilles and Xavier, both happy to commit themselves along with Helene and Anne-Charlotte and to contribute strengthening this small bridge between India and the South of France.

All our cotton products are made from 100% organic cotton certified GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).

Why organic cotton?

Clothes made from organic cotton contain no chemicals or pesticides and won’t trigger allergic reactions in your baby’s sensitive skin. (Babies’ immature immune systems and rapidly developing bodies make them especially susceptible to chemical residues.)

All our products are tested for banned chemicals such as formaldehyde, nickel, pesticides and heavy metals.

Sustainable farming practices used in growing organic cotton don’t pollute the water, soil or air and actually improve the quality of the soil! Organic cotton clothes smell cleaner and feel softer than conventional cotton clothes. You can really notice the difference! Organic cotton is safer for your baby, the farmers, and the environment!

By buying organic cotton clothes and helping the organic cotton market to grow, you are voting with your money to encourage a cleaner, safer way to make clothes.

Our values are reflected in our choice of a manufacturing partner and are echoed throughout the way we do business. We aim to be respectful of the environment, of the well-being of the producers and artisans we work with, as well as ensuring that a fair wage is paid along each step of the production process. The cotton we use is

certified ECOCERT Fair Trade (since June 2007) and FLO (Fairtrade Labelling Organizations). The production unit has obtained the EKO Label certification, as well as the Social Accountability 8000 certification. Here at La Queue du Chat, we look for ways to promote means of production and manufacturing that ensure a fair living for disadvantaged people and working conditions that are respectful of people’s fundamental rights. We also aim to establish long-term working relationships with our partners in order to foster continued working relations. La Queue du Chat looks at practically supporting projects that benefit the community where our products are made.

Last but not least, we commit to being transparent in our business activities and operations and we are members of the organisation Transparent Trade.
